Comments from the author
As the year seventeen-hundred and seventy-six came to a close (and we published issue #4 of the Courant,) the colonies had
just declared their independence from Britain. Now, over 10 years later, we publish a new issue after the colonies have been
through so much. We fought and won a bloody war of independence, established new articles of confederation, elected 10 Presidents
of the Congress of the Confederation, and saw those articles fail. Now, we write to proclaim a new Constitution.
John Winthrop, in his classic sermon calling for Christian charity, proclaimed that this new nation should serve as a city
upon a hill. Truly, the eyes of the world are turned toward us to see if we shall succeed or fail. The world has
seen us declare the right of all men to cast off oppressive governments. Now, they will see if this new document will truly
create a more perfect union.
